Mainstream consumer technology is rapidly transforming into some of the most powerful assistive tools on the market. A prime example is the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 smart glasses. With the launch of the Version 28 firmware update (and recent features from Version 27.1), these glasses are taking another massive leap forward, bringing practical, life-changing enhancements to travel, sensory awareness, and hands-free communication for the blind and visually impaired community.
Auditory Pedestrian Navigation Guidance

For anyone with low vision, navigating outdoor environments requires intense concentration. Trying to hold a smartphone to read a map while managing a white cane or guide dog harness can be frustrating..
The introduction of Pedestrian Navigation in Version 28 solves this. You can now get turn-by-turn walking directions delivered directly through the glasses' open-ear speakers. Simply say:
"Hey Meta, navigate to [your destination]."
Your glasses will instantly calculate your route and guide you. If your destination is too far to walk, the system will automatically send driving directions straight to your connected phone.
Location Sharing from Phone to Glasses
If you prefer searching for destinations on your phone first, the transition is seamless. Find your walking destination in your mapping app, tap Share, select Meta AI, and the turn-by-turn directions will instantly start playing on your glasses. Currently available across the USA, Canada, Puerto Rico, and select global cities, this feature keeps your eyes and hands completely free for your cane or dog.
Immersive Soundscapes: Spatial Audio

Sound is a critical channel of information. It's how we build a mental map of our surroundings, identify obstacles, and orient ourselves in busy areas.
With Version 28, Meta has introduced Spatial Audio for a much richer, multi-dimensional listening experience. This new feature enhances the standard stereo output, surrounding you with immersive sound when listening to music, podcasts, or descriptive audiobooks.
Beyond entertainment, spatialized sound helps reduce listening fatigue. It feels less like sound is being pumped directly into your ears and more like it's coexisting with the natural environmental cues around you, which is essential for staying safe and aware. To turn it on, open the Meta View app, navigate to Settings > Audio, and select Spatial.
Safety and Connection: Video Calling & Extended Recording
Two powerful features from the recent Version 27.1 update continue to redefine independence and safety:
- Pocket-Start Video Calling: If you're traveling alone and need quick visual assistance—like reading a street sign or finding a doorway—you no longer need to take out your phone. Simply say: "Hey Meta, video call Jonah on WhatsApp." This instantly shares your glasses' camera view with a trusted contact, while your phone remains safely in your pocket or bag.
- 5-Minute Video Recording: The glasses now allow you to record continuous, high-definition videos for up to 5 minutes (up from the previous limit). Go to Settings > Media > Video Settings and select 5 minutes. This is ideal for recording a walk down a tricky sidewalk to review later with an Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructor.
Expanding Access and Active Living
Meta has also expanded support for global languages and active lifestyles with these updates:
- Mandarin Chinese Support (v28): Enjoy complete voice controls, calling, messaging, media capture, and Meta AI commands in Mandarin.
- Turkish Language Support (v27.1): Broad support across all voice and control features.
- Hands-Free Golf Insights (v27.1): For active players, the glasses connect with top golf apps like 18Birdies and Arccos. Say "Hey Meta, start a round of golf" to hear hands-free green distances, club recommendations, and score logging.
- Anti-Tampering Protection (v28): Continuous security improvements to protect against camera tampering.
How to Update Your Smart Glasses
Updating your glasses is straightforward. Make sure they are charged to at least 50%, turn on your phone's Bluetooth, and follow these steps:
- Open the Meta AI app on your smartphone.
- Tap the Settings gear icon in the bottom right.
- Select Your Glasses and tap Updates.
- Follow the prompts to install the new firmware.
