Resources for the Blind and Visually Impaired

The Georgia Library Service for the Blind and Print Disabled (GLS) is a free service that provides library materials and services to people who are blind, visually impaired, or unable to hold or read a book due to a physical disability. GLS is a division of the Georgia Public Library Service and is funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

GLS offers a variety of services, including:

  • Talking books: GLS has a collection of over 450,000 talking books, which are audiobooks on cartridge or digital download. Talking books can be borrowed by mail or downloaded to a computer or mobile device.
  • Braille books: GLS has a collection of over 25,000 braille books, which are books printed in raised dots that can be read by touch. Braille books can be borrowed by mail.
  • Large print books: GLS has a collection of over 100,000 large print books, which are books printed in larger type than standard books. Large print books can be borrowed by mail.
  • Magazines: GLS offers a variety of magazines in talking book, braille, and large print formats. Magazines can be borrowed by mail.
  • Newspapers: GLS offers a variety of newspapers in talking book format. Newspapers can be downloaded to a computer or mobile device.
  • Reference services: GLS provides reference services to help patrons with their research needs. Librarians can help patrons find books, articles, and other resources on a variety of topics.

GLS also offers a variety of programs and services for children and young adults, including:

  • Storytime: GLS offers storytime programs for children of all ages. Storytime programs are held in person at the GLS office and online.
  • Book clubs: GLS offers book clubs for children and young adults. Book clubs are a great way for children and young adults to connect with others who love to read.
  • Summer reading programs: GLS offers summer reading programs for children and young adults. Summer reading programs are a great way for children and young adults to stay engaged in reading during the summer months.
